Clocks are not sexy. We get it. There are way cooler things you want to think about for your operations, like your next big technology or machine purchase.

Times are changing — and we’re not just talking figuratively. On any given day, there are 86,400 seconds. But this June, the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service is recommending adding a positive leap second, a compromise to keep mankind on par with astronomical time.

June 2014 had the most rain in recorded Minnesota history, so it seems now is a good time to talk about clock that continue to work during a power outage due to a storm.

Daylight saving time (DST) starts on Sunday and most of us will be losing an hour of sleep when the clocks spring ahead. Perhaps you’ll lose even more as you spend time throughout the week adjusting each clock in your building and dealing with complaints about the clocks showing the wrong time. But it doesn’t have to be that way! 

When clocks aren’t synchronized, it means more than just dealing with complaints. Punctuality becomes a problem, meetings or classes start and end at the wrong time, recordkeeping may be off, and quality or safety could be compromised.

Something red and shiny caught my eye as I drove past a car lot earlier this week, so I did a quick 180 and pulled in for a closer look. Wow, a new 305 HP sports car. “Perfect,” I thought, already daydreaming about the jaunts we could enjoy together. My reverie was interrupted by the voice of my favorite salesman, keys jangling in his hand. “Isn’t that one of the prettiest cars you’ve ever seen?” he teased. “It’s really fast and full of gas. Take it out for a spin to try it for yourself. Then we’ll do the paperwork so you can drive it home.”
